PROTEIN
STRUCTURE
When
plants absorb MSM from rainwater, it’s converted into sulfur with the amino
acids Methionine and Cysteine, Taurine and Cystine, the other two sulfur amino acids are made from
Cysteine.
The body makes about 80% of the amino acids it needs, and these are
called non=essential. The remaining 20%, are called
essential, must be from food.
Methionine and Cystine are two of them. There are about 28 known amino
acids. Each type of protein is made
from a unique combination of amino acids in specific combinations.
Two molecules of Cysteine can oxidize and
bond through sulfur [-S-S-] bonds [S].
These bonds are key factors holding proteins in shape, and determine
form, properties, and biological activities of
proteins.
CONNECTIVE
TISSUES
Nails
and hair consist mostly of tough protein with high sulfur content, called Keratine.
Flexible tissues such as connective tissue and cartilage have proteins
with flexible sulfur bonds.
Cartilage is most abundant of the body, and a major component of all
connective tissue. In skin,
collagen works with fibers of another protein called elastin, that gives skin
elasticity. In cartilage, the
sulfur containing proteoglycans glucosamine and
condroitin form with collagen, a fibrous protein
that gives cartilage the structure and flexibility.
The
body’s connective tissue importance is beyond keeping cells together. Prof. Pischinger, Prof. Heine, Dr. Popp research showed the
importance of electromagnetic fields in bio-formation. Their
research demonstrated that the soft connective tissue, extra-cellular matrix
surrounding cells, serve more than simple structure and connective
purposes. It’s also important in
transporting nutrients, electrolytes, signal compounds, atomic and subatomic
particles. Therefore, the soft
connective tissue forms essential communication networks within the body through
transfer of fine matter bio-information.
Later
in life as age sets in, flexible tissue lose elastic properties.
A shortage of sulfur is the likely problem.
Consequences are stiffing of muscles and joints, rippling of skin,
decreased elasticity of lung tissues and arterial blood vessels.

CELL MEMBRANE
PERMEABILITY
All
cell and their organelles are surrounded by membranes.
Membranes consist of two layers of molecules placed opposite one another
and consisting of an essential fatty acid on one end and a sulfur containing
amino acid on the other. The amino
acids are interconnected in a manner forming a surface into which proteins and
other membrane components are inserted and secured.
These proteins are necessary to transport through the
cell membrane many types of
nutrients and waste materials.
Sulfur
bridges form flexible connections between cells and surrounding connective
tissues, allowing cells to retain elasticity. When sulfur is in short supply, cell
walls harden, and cells lose elasticity.
Transport proteins of membranes become locked, and membranes become less
permeable, resulting in reduced transport of oxygen and nutrients into cells and
reduced excretion of waste products from cells. This is a shortage of oxygen and
nutrients, and accumulation of toxic metabolic waste products in cells. Reduced energy and then degenerative
disease result.
Free
radical pathology has shown that Thio (-SH) groups of sulfur containing amino acids can protect cell membrane protein
chains from oxidation. Also, Dr.
Johanna Budwig demonstrated that sulfur containing
amino acids in cell membranes resonate with double connections of the fatty
acids releasing of electrons.
Electron clouds are formed, which move along fatty acid chains. This way, electrical currents evolve
which form the basis of all electrical energy in the body.
This energy can be measured in heartbeat, nerve stimulations and muscle
contractions: Thus all chemical and electrical reactions make life
possible.
METABOLISM
Enzymes
are proteins that control all important life functions.
Regulating all metabolic processes. Sulfur bridges are responsible for
spatial structure of enzymes.
Without sulfur bridges, enzymes lack biological activity due to
deviations of spatial structure.
Sulfur shortage causes reduced production of biological active enzymes,
resulting in reduction of many metabolic processes.
Sulfur is important for cellular energy production in which glucose is
metabolized under the release of energy.
Most
important, sulfur plays a role in the electron transport system, as part of
iron/sulfur proteins in mitochondria, the energy factory of cells.
Plus, sulfur participates in the vitamin-B Thiamine (B1) and Biotin. These vitamins are essential for
converting carbohydrates into energy, by burning glucose.
Insulin is a hormone excreted by the pancreas, and mainly functions to
regulate blood sugar level.
Insulin plays an important role in carbohydrate metabolism.
Each insulin molecule contains two amino acid chains, connected to each
other by sulfur bridges. These
sulfur bridges are important for proper functioning of insulin.
Without these bridges, the hormone loses
bioactivity.

Previously,
science held that the amino acids Methionine and
Cystiene were the important sources of sulfur. However since finding of the earth
sulfur cycle, the theory is being brought into question.
Hundreds of millions of years ago algae in oceans started producing
simple organic sulfur compounds, which led to the formation of MSM.
This biologically active sulfur was probably the most important source of
sulfur for all subsequent developing life forms.
This gives the belief that higher forms of life most likely are
genetically programmed to use MSM as a primary source of sulfur.
Theory has it, investigated so far, that MSM can be eaten by all
organisms, in almost unlimited amounts without causing any toxic effects. This cannot be said about the sulfur
containing amino acids Methionine and Cysteine,
which can be eaten in small amounts, which can cause undesired toxic responses
in larger doses.

Experiments
with MSM with radio-labeled sulfur showed that after ingestion MSM is bound to
the mucosa. Apparently MSM is binding to receptor sites on the mucous membrane
surface in the intestinal and urogenital tracts and
respiratory system. In so doing it
shows a blocking interface between host and environment.
There are many health-benefiting implications in such natural
interactions; allergens and parasites cannot bind to the mucosa, toxins are
oxidized, and free radicals are eliminated.

MSM is a natural analgesic: blocks transfer of pain impulses by nerve

MSM blocks inflammations and inflammatory processes. Enhances the activity of cortisol, a
natural anti-inflammatory hormone produced by the
body.
MSM
improves the permeability of cell membranes. This improves the uptake of nutrients
and many vitamins and elimination of waste products and excess cellular
fluids.
MSM
dilates blood vessels, enhancing the blood circulation-This too, helps to
eliminate waste products from the body, which speeds up
healing.
MSM
is a muscle relaxant. This is
important and often overlooked benefit of MSM. Many chronic pains are aggravated by

SYNERGISTIC
EFFECT
MSM
is considered a potentiator of most vitamins and

E, amino acids, selenium, calcium, magnesium and many others.
MSM improves the cellular uptake of these nutrients, and prolongs their
lives. The body can better utilize
the nutrients, and taking dietary supplements is more efficient.
Plus, fewer dietary supplements need be taken.
ANTIOXIDANT
MSM
is a strong antioxidant, capable of binding and inactivating free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules and
atoms with unpaired electrons, which, by force of nature, attract electrons from
their surrounding environment.
Free radicals are not all harmful: actually, life without free radicals
is impossible. They are needed for
cellular energy production. The
liver produces free radicals during the breakdown of harmful substances, and the
body’s immune system uses free radicals to kill viruses and bacteria. The body has antioxidants that bind and
deactivate free radicals. The
normal production of free radicals can be very harmful.
They can begin a chain reaction that can eventually cause great harm to
cell membranes and chromosomes.
Overproduction of free radicals is caused by physical and mental stress,
malnutrition, air pollution, heavy metals and organic contaminants in drinking
water and food, radiation and cigarette smoke. In such cases the body needs extra
antioxidants from food. MSM is
such an antioxidant.
As
a major donor, MSM is essential for the proper functioning of the body’s
antioxidant system. When
neutralizing free radicals, the body uses a variety of antioxidant enzymes that
contain sulfuric amino acids.
These derive their structure and biological activity from sulfur bonds
(S-S). MSM provides the sulfur for
the amino sulfur acids, Methionine, Cysteine
and Taurine, which are considered powerful
antioxidants. When split off, the
thio (-SH) groups of these amino acids are capable
of neutralizing free radicals.
Sulfur is also necessary for the formation of what is considered the most
powerful nutritional antioxidant, glutathione (S).
And as stated before, MSM potentiates the effect of well known
nutritional antioxidants, such as vitamins C, E, coenzyme Q10, selenium and
others. MSM itself also appears to
act as an antioxidant. The mucosa
contains a carbon-sulfur bond cleaving enzyme, Termed C-S lyase.
Studies show that when bound to the mucosa, cleavage of MSM provides an
electron deficient group CH3SO2 which can neutralize free
radicals.
DETOXIFICATION
MSM
dissolves in many organic & inorganic compounds.
Bound to the mucosa and split into an electron deficient group (CH3SO4),
MSM reacts with toxins, affects inactivation and speeds excretion.
Plus, MSM enhances permeability of cell membranes,
making them easier for nutrients to be taken up by the cells, and waste products
to be eliminated. Speaking
practically, MSM drastically increases the ability of cells to excrete toxic
waste products. Health
practitioners working with MSM state that it is the most powerful detoxifying nutraceutical or pharmaceutical agent they have ever
worked with.
Recently
a young artist sought help in a psychiatric institution for severe mental
complaints. Antidepressants
worsened his problem to a degree that he decided to look for alternative
help. Microscopic exam showed
using the Life Blood/HLB test that he was suffering from heavy metal poisoning
due to the paints used in his arts.
Patient thus sought the help of various traditional
and alternative medical practitioners, who prescribed pharmaceutical drugs,
homeopathic and orthomolecular detoxifiers and bio-resonance therapy. After 1 ˝ yrs of detoxification there
was some improvement in the blood, but still exhibited severe toxicity
symptoms. Later, blood
work improved somewhat but the basic complaints were unchanged.
On advice of
the authors, he stopped taking medications, and was put on high
dosages of MSM [15 grams/day, supported by weekly Ayurvedic sweat baths to stimulate waste discharge. Two months later showed his blood had
returned to normal, and indicated that for the first time since being treated,
he noticed a significant improvement in his condition.
NEUROLOGICAL
DISEASES
Toxic
materials, like heavy metals and organic compounds are extremely sensitive by
the brain. Many of these compounds
accumulate in nerve cells where they cause severe oxidative damage.
Neurological disturbances can be the result.
MSM is one of the few antioxidants that can pass easily through the
blood-brain barrier. It prevents
and repairs oxidative damage and restores cell membrane elasticity and
permeability. This allows nerve
cells to begin excretion of waste products.
An
older woman suffered from aluminum poisoning. The heavy metal was in her brain
causing neurological damage, confining the woman to 6 yrs in bed unable to
communicate with her surroundings, during this time not speaking.
MDs could not help her and gave up. She was dependent on her husband. A natural health care practitioner
advised 2 tsp MSM( +/- 15 grams) daily. MSM passed
the blood-brain barrier and restored the permeability of the brain cell
membranes. Brains cells purged the metal toxins. Two weeks later the orthomolecular
physician prescribed a warm bath to aid in eliminating toxins through the
skin. Twenty minutes later in the
bath she smiled and said ”Gee I feel much better
now.” These were the first words
spoken in years. Months later she
was able to lead a normal life.
This illustrates the powerful action of MSM.
ALLERGIES
MSM
alleviates symptoms of many allergies, including food, contact, inhalation, and
others. The major characteristic
of anti-allergic of MSM is the ability to bind to the mucosa and present a
natural blocking interface between hosts and allergens. MSM alleviates allergies
through detoxification and elimination of free radicals, improvement of cell
permeability. A direct
correlation between concentration of MSM used and resistance to allergens has
been established. Some have noted
that MSM works as a histamine as good as traditional
antihistamines, without negative side effects.
AUTOIMMUNE
DISEASES
MSM
effectively fights inflammation from autoimmune reactions, which is when the
immune system turns on itself, i.e. people who suffer from arthritis often
benefit from MSM. Studies have
shown that MSM supplementation significantly reduces joint degeneration and
inflammation. A study of 24 people
with symptomatic osteoarthritis were treated with
either regular (NSAID) drug or MSM 3 grams daily.
A month later both groups noted equal improvements in pain
stiffness. In a different
experiment, mice with pre-disposition to rheumatoid arthritis-like joint lesions
were studied. It was found that two
month old mice that were given 3% MSM water for 3 months did not suffer
degeneration of articular cartilage.
With the control group given only tap water, 50% of the mice were found
to have focal degeneration of articular cartilige. Almost all (95%) control group had
inflammatory reaction in the synovial tissues, compared to the less severe
inflammatory reaction in the 50% MSM group. Beneficial effect is due partly to MSM’s
ability to improve cell permeability, letting harmful substances (lactic acid,
toxins) flow out while letting nutrients go in, thus preventing pressure buildup
in cells that cause inflammation in joints.
Mice
prone to development of Autoimmune Lymphoproliferative Disease (ALD) were fed, for one month,
a diet including 3% solution MSM drinking water.
The mean life span of the control group was 5.5 months, while the life
span of MSM group was 10 months plus.
MSM group showed decreased anti-nuclear antibody responses and
significant lessening of lymphadenopathy, spleenomegaly and anemia development of the autoimmune
disease ALD. Other mice bred for
their propensity to have autoimmune disease Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) experiments showed MSM to have
protective effect before and after the disease. Mice on a diet with MSM water from age
one month suffered lower death and liver damage than control groups with tap
water. In seven months, 30% of controls died, while the MSM group lived. Also, when 7 months old and showing
advanced lupus group were fed MSM diet, 62% of mice were still alive after 9
months compared to 14% of control group receiving just
tap water.
CANCER
Some
experiments showed that oral adding of MSM can protect rats against onset of
cancer. A study, rats bred
susceptible to breast cancer and given certain cancer compounds were fed MSM
diet for eight days. Control group
was not given MSM for the preliminary period, but all were given cancer causing
doses. There was no statistical
difference of tumors developing in them, except the MSM group developed their
tumors 100 days later. These tumors became cancers 130 later than the control
group. Taking a two year average
(expectancy life of rats), 100 days are equal of 10
years in human life.
In
another experiment rats were given 1% MSM water, in the study, and the control
had tap water. One week after
dietary diet, all rats were injected with Dimethylhydrazine (colon cancer causer).
In the nine month’s experiment the number of bowl tumors occurring was
statistically the same on both.
But, the appearance of first tumors took much longer with MSM rats. Conclusion:
MSM significantly lengthens tumor onset compared to
controls.
PARASITES
MSM
discovery is the anti-parasitic action against “Giardia, Trichomonas,
roundworms, nematodes, Enterobius and other
intestinal worms. Animal studies
include mice determined to have pin worms (Enterobius) by fecal cast exam.
They were given commercial food and water, containing 2% MSM by weight.
17 days later, fecal exam showed worm and eggs free.
Blood level of one MSM examined animal exceeded 30 ppm or mg/kg.
Human study with a man with Giardia lambia (primitive area water drunk) was given 500 mg 3
times daily for 14 days. On
8th day was free from symptoms, and two stool specimens a week later
were free of organism. Another
study, Trichomonas Vaginalis was treated successfully by 1 gram MSM orally a
day, and daily topical applications 5% aqueous MSM for a
week.
The
anti-parasitic property of MSM is from its ability to bind to the mucosa and a
natural blocking interface between host and parasite.
It’s as if a coating is put down on the mucosa, which parasites cannot
penetrate or cling to, being
unable to stick are just flushed from the body. In vitro research shows the
anti-parasitic, antifungal, and antibacterial action of MSM
concentrations. MSM
concentrations of 1 mg/ml and less demonstrates no inhibition of Giardia
lambia, but, at 20 mg/ml it was strongly inhibiting,
and at 40 mg/ml above quickly killed organisms. According to Dr. Herschier, up to 1-2 grams MSM /kg body weight daily. One therefore builds a safety tolerated
blood level up to 4000 ppm (mg/kg) level toxic to
many infective organisms and harmless to the host.
A
growing number of natural physicians are concerned about parasites.
It is becoming more clear that they can be a
source of poisoning that can spread in the body and affect the immune
system. It is interesting that MSM
may be nature’s original way of protecting us against
parasites.
DIABETES
Sulfur
containing B vitamin C is a critical part of Glucokinase, an enzyme involved in the use of sugar
glucose. Sulfur is part of
insulin, the protein hormone secreted by the pancreas that is necessary for
carbohydrate metabolism. Lack of
nutritional sulfur in diets can result in low production of insulin. Studies shows MSM improves cellular
glucose uptake by improved cell permeability, and balancing blood sugar level
and returning the pancreas to normal function.
MUSCLE
SORENESS AND CRAMPS
MSM
in combination with Vitamin C demonstrates great ability to lower or eliminate
incidence of muscle soreness, leg and back cramps.
MSM is successful with geriatric patients with such cramps in the night
or after long periods of inactivity.
People with stiff muscles and joints report an improvement using MSM for
some time. There are cases of
people who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome being cured with MSM.
An elderly women was to have surgery on both
wrists. On advice of the author
started to use MSM. A month later
her symptoms vanished, therefore needing no operation.
Competing
athletes can learn from million-dollar horses before a race how to prevent muscle soreness. Trainers administer MSM before races to
prevent muscle soreness and later to lessen risk of cramping and improve
physical recovery. Physical fatigue syndrome after intense athletic activities
in sports, usually persisting for 8-10 days, was gone in 2-3 days by those who
took 1-2 grams MSM/day in the preceding six months.
CONSTIPATION
and ACIDITY
A
study showed that 75% of individuals on one or more ant-acids or H2histamine
receptor antagonists for stomach acidity were able to reduce or eliminate such
medication within a week with MSM supplementation.
In another study, twenty-one subjects with history of constipation were
given MSM 500 mg daily doses with 1 gram ascorbic acid.
All subjects returned to normal and remained such while taking MSM in
their diet. Studies show that MSM
often gives relief from stomach acidity and constipation better than prescribed
medication.
LUNG
DYSFUNCTION
MSM
lets the body to take up more oxygen.
Firstly it improves elasticity of lung cells and permeability of lung
cell membranes, letting more air in to breath and oxygen to pass through
membranes into the blood stream.
Secondly, it prevents and corrects clotting of red blood cells, allowing
blood to absorb more oxygen. Plus,
by improving cell membrane permeability, body cells can take up more oxygen
producing more energy. Those
suffering from lung dysfunctions may benefit greatly from MSM. In one study with
seven humans with respiratory deficiency, MSM
was given from 250-1500 mg/day.
Five had emphysema, two had lung tumors with
additional impairment function due to pleural accumulation.
Both were on radiation chemotherapy before MSM in the diet, but without
benefit. Before and during test
period, Five with emphysema walked a measured mile,
compatible with capabilities.
Within 4 weeks of MSM, all emphysema sufferers doubled their walking
distance. The two with lung
tumors, assessed by attending doctors and nurses were more alert and had a
better attitude than before testing.

STRESS
People
taking MSM report feeling better and stronger and capable of increased
endurance. In a group of 14 persons
using MSM for periods of 7 months to over a year, none became ill.
One study involved (2) groups of 25 goldfish, removed from a large
aquarium and put in two identical small aquariums.
One was fed normal fish food, the other the same food with 2% by weight
MSM added. Movement confinement, temperature changes and marginal oxygenation
stressed fish in both tanks equally.
After two days, one fish of the MSM group died, verses 11 (50%) of
control group.
A
common practice in intensive cattle breeding is antibiotics in animal feed, to
promote growth and prevent outbreaks of stress-related diseases.
Animal products (meat, milk, eggs) contain antibiotic residues passed on
to consumers. The large usage of
antibiotics is largely responsible for the creation of resistant bacteria

In
practice, most people who use MSM notice very little at the onset, or may
experience slight detoxification symptoms. These symptoms usually disappear. Fewer then 20% users may feel
